This is an independent project. It is not operated by, affiliated with, or endorsed by the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau, the Department of the Treasury, or any other government body. It republishes public-domain data those bodies publish.

Not legal or compliance advice

Nothing here is legal advice. Label approval, appellation eligibility and varietal designation are regulated matters with real consequences. The boundaries and designations that bind you are the ones codified in the Code of Federal Regulations — principally 27 CFR parts 4 and 9 — and the determinations TTB itself makes. Where this API and the CFR disagree, the CFR is right and this API is wrong. Every appellation record carries its CFR citation so the controlling text is one hop away.

Accuracy

TTB's own notice applies here too: company names, addresses, permit numbers and other details change over time, and TTB makes no warranty as to the accuracy, reliability or completeness of the data. Neither do I. This service adds parsing, normalisation and indexing on top — each of which can introduce its own errors. Anything inferred rather than read directly from a source is labelled as inferred in the response; that labelling is a statement about provenance, not a guarantee of correctness.

Alcohol content

This API does not report alcohol by volume, and any alcohol figure it returns is a regulatory band derived from a class/type code under 27 CFR 4.21, not a measurement of any particular wine. Do not use it as one.

Availability

Free service, one small server, no uptime commitment. It is rate limited so that one caller cannot take it down for everyone. If it matters to your business, cache what you need — the complete datasets are published as static files precisely so you can.

Provided “as is”, without warranty of any kind, express or implied. To the fullest extent permitted by law, the author accepts no liability for any loss or damage arising from use of this service or the data it serves.

Reporting a problem

Wrong data, a security issue, or a record you believe should not be published: LinkedIn. Personal-information concerns are taken seriously and acted on quickly — this service deliberately withholds applicant contact names, phone numbers and street addresses for exactly that reason.
